One of the key questions we’ve had concerning bagrada bugs since it first arrived in the desert 5 years ago is where does the small stinkbug spend it’s summers? We obviously know where they are from September until late May; in cole crops and brassica seed crops. However, we have never been quite sure where they go after the last seed crop is harvested. Fortunately, we’ve learned much about the seasonal ecology of bagrada in the past few years, and this past week I received a number of reports from PCAs of bagrada bug adults being found in sweep net samples in cotton from the Gila and Yuma Valleys. These recent bagrada sightings are reminiscent of reports during the summer of 2010 when finding bagrada adults in cotton was very common throughout the summer. These recent reports are also not surprising considering that unpublished research conducted at the University of California, Riverside by Drs. Tom Perring and Darcy Reed has shown that adult bagrada bugs are capable of using non-brassicaceous plants (Sudan grass, Bermuda grass, corn, and cotton) to survive for extended periods in the absence of brassicaceous host plants (e.g., broccoli, cauliflower). They found that bagrada adults can survive for longer than 90 days on cotton, 60 days on Bermuda grass, and 30 days on corn and Sudan grass. Furthermore, Sudan grass and Bermuda grass were shown to support multiple generations of bagrada in greenhouse studies, although generation times of the insect were much longer than on broccoli. Based on their research and anecdotal observations by myself and others in Yuma, I’ve concluded that these common summer crops should be considered key sources of bagrada bug infestations for fall cole crop plantings. So you might want to keep this information in mind and pay close attention as you’re sampling cotton and other crops this summer. If by chance you find bagrada on any of these crops, please let me know. Learning more about how this pest bridges the brassica-free, summer months should lead to a better understanding of how to effectively manage it in the future. This study was conducted at the JV farms at Gila Valley. Lettuce variety ‘Guapo’ was seeded, then sprinkler-irrigated to germinate seed on September 19, 2023, on double rows 12 in. apart on beds with 42 in. between bed centers.  Rest of the irrigation was supplied by furrow irrigation or rainfall. Treatments were replicated five times in a randomized complete block design. Each replicate plot consisted of 25 ft of bed, which contained two 25 ft rows of lettuce. Plants were thinned on October 9, 2023 at the 3-4 leaf stage to a 12-inch spacing. Treatment beds were separated by single nontreated beds. Treatments were applied by incorporating in soil before seeding or with a tractor-mounted boom sprayer that delivered 50 gal/acre at 100 psi to flat-fan nozzles spaced 12 in apart.

Fusarium wilt (caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lactucae ) rating was done in the field by observing the typical symptom of lettuce wilt. Confirmation was done by cutting the cross section of roots. Disease scoring/rating was done on December 6, 2023. 
 
The data in the table illustrate the degree of disease control obtained by application of the various treatments in this trial. The disease pressure was extremely high in 2023, and most treatments showed little or no control against the disease. The treatments that showed some activity were Bexfond, Cevya, Rhyme, and Serifel. Plant vigor was normal and phytotoxicity symptoms were not observed in any treatments in this trial.

In 2018, University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, Yuma Agricultural Center and the Yuma Center of Excellence for Desert Agriculture hosted an Automated Thinning and Weeding Technologies Field Day. The event featured twelve equipment vendors and university researchers showcasing and demoing the latest automated ag technologies in the field. Company representatives were on hand to discuss the technologies and answer questions. Since then, there has been a tremendous amount of innovation and development in these technologies. Several start-up companies have introduced new machinery into the marketplace and the older technologies have advanced greatly. We haven’t set a firm date yet but are planning for mid-October. The event is open to all companies and researchers that would like to show their automated thinning and/or weeding technology. Weeds are a problem year after year even where they have been diligently controlled. A major reason for this is that weed seeds continually move into fields by irrigation water, wind, equipment, contaminated seed and other means. Controlling weeds on irrigation ditch banks can greatly help to reduce weed seed movement into fields.
The EPA regards non-crop areas as those that are not dedicated to crop production. Although crops are not normally grown on irrigation ditch banks, these areas should not be managed as non-crop. Several very broad spectrum and long lasting herbicides are registered for non-crop areas which include roadsides, industrial sites, fence rows, around structures, railroads etc.. Irrigation ditch banks should be considered separately because of their proximity to crop fields and irrigation water and the potential for herbicide movement into sensitive areas.
It is important to read the label carefully and only use those products that are specifically allowed for use on ditch banks. Some products are restricted to drainage ditch banks or dry ditches. Some can be used only above the water line and some can only be used for non-irrigation ditch banks Because most ditches here are used for irrigation, this can be confusing. The definition of a ditch however, can include an open trench or natural channel. It can also include ditches that are not in use for long periods of time. Some labels specify how long this non-use period should be. Some herbicides that have been used on ditch banks in the past are now restricted from this use because of groundwater contamination or off target movement that has occasionally occurred. Do not assume that products that were used for ditch banks in the past can still be used. Even very old products like MSMA can no longer be used for irrigation or drainage ditches. The following summarizes how some of the more common products that have been used on ditches can be used although the product labels should be read for more complete directions. There are several broad spectrum herbicides that are registered for “Non-Crop” sites but that are retricted from use on irrigation ditches. These include Bromacil,Triclopyr,Imazapyr,Thiazapyr Flumioxyzin,Imazomox,Topamezone,Valpar and others.

Corn earworm:           
CEW moth captures have steadily decreased over the past 2 weeks, and areawide about average for late-October.
 
Beet armyworm:        
Trap counts reached their highest levels so far this season, particularly in Tacna, Wellton and Yuma Valley, and about average for late October.
 
Cabbage looper:         
Cabbage looper numbers decreased areawide, and are still below average for this time of the year.
 
Diamondback moth:  
Sporadic DBM activity in low numbers throughout the area, trending well below average for late October.
 
Whitefly:                     
Adult movement increased in the past 2 weeks and above average for late October.
 
Thrips:                         
Thrips adult activity peaked in the last two weeks, and trending below average in October.
 
Aphids:                       
Winged adults continue to be captured for the season, consistent with heavy winds from W-NW. Aphid captures thus far have been well below average.
 
Leafminers:                 
Adult activity decreased in most areas, and trending about average for late October.
