Lettuce aphid (commonly referred to as red aphid) showed up early this year in organic lettuce and had not been reported in conventional lettuce until the past few weeks. It now appears to be spreading and showing up more regularly in lettuce fields throughout the area.  Over the past two weeks I have had several conversations with PCAs concerning lettuce aphid in both organic and conventional lettuce with reports of infested fields in Roll, Bard, Dome Valley, Wellton and Yuma Valley.  They are beginning to build up to high numbers at the Yuma Ag Center, and in fact are the predominant aphid species present in my lettuce efficacy trials. This is not real common. The last time lettuce aphids were this abundant on desert produce was the spring of 2012.  Keep in mind, daytime high temperatures in the 70-80's are ideal for lettuce aphid population growth, and the 14-day weather forecast suggests that lettuce aphid will be around for a while. 
 
A few things to consider about lettuce aphids relative to the other aphids we commonly see. Lettuce aphids prefer to colonize the terminal growth, and generally found in the heads or hearts. Sampling should be focused in the terminal growth of young plants, and in the heads and hearts of older plants. When they are present under ideal temperatures (like right now) they can reproduce prolifically, producing many more winged adults than other aphid species.  This is likely why we are beginning increased dispersal and new infestations. 
 
Finally, a few suggestions for management. If your lettuce is young and not closed in yet, consider using an aphicide with contact activity like Sequoia. Assuming sprays can reach new growth, you should see dead aphids with 3-5 days. Also, avoid using pyrethroids on smaller lettuce. This will conserve some of the natural enemies like syrphid fly and lady beetle larvae that may provide some additional control. On older lettuce you best choice is Movento at 5 oz/ac.  It is advised that you increase your rate of penetrating adjuvant to 0.375 % vol/vol or higher on larger plants. This should help move the product into the vascular tissue and improve systemic activity.   Don’t expect to initially see a lot of dead aphids. It normally requires 7-10 days of activity before significant reduction in the infestation is observed. Sooner when temperatures are in the 80’s. Look for the wingless adults (larger brown forms); their absence is a good sign that you are cycling them out.  Obviously, use of pyrethroids is more important on lettuce approaching harvest in order to prevent contamination by trash bugs.  For more information on lettuce aphid please refer to Lettuce Aphid on Spring Produce.

Plant viruses cannot penetrate the intact plant cuticle and cellulose cell wall that acts as barrier to infection. The virus overcomes the problem by either avoiding the need to penetrate (example seed transmission) or by using the wound in plants as infection site, or transmission by insects, nematodes or fungi as a vector.  
 
Mechanical transmission involves the introduction of infective virus or viral RNA into the wounds of plants. Viruses such as Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), Potato virus X are highly stable, and reach high concentration in plants.  As you all know TMV can readily contaminate hands, clothings, and implements and can be spread by worker. TMV can even spread mechanically by tobacco smokers as the virus is present in cured tobacco leaves. 
Mechanical transmission is of great importance.  In field and greenhouse, great amount of caution has to be implemented to not transmit the infection. Field sanitation, tool sanitation is very important to avoid the spread of virus. 
However, in experimental world mechanical transmission is a very useful tool to study viruses. Mechanical inoculation of virus to a heathy host plant is done for assays, to produce local lesions, in the propagation to of viruses for purification, in host range study, diagnosis, and to understand the interaction between virus and susceptible cells. 
 
 
Seed transmission:  About 1/7 th of the known plant viruses are transmitted through seeds. Different viruses have different host ranges (the plants that they can infect). Tobacco mosaic virus, Cucumber mosaic virus are some viruses with a very wide host range and they may not be seed transmissible in all plants they infect. Seed transmission plays a huge role in virus epidemiology. Not only they can be a primary source of infection, leading to an epidemic in the field upon conducible environment, seed transmission is an effective way for long distance travel of the virus, thus introducing the virus to new places. You have heard of USDA regulations/restrictions on different crops, from certain foreign countries to avoid introduction of infected seeds/plant materials. 
 
Seed transmission can occur simply by contamination of seeds, as in tomato seeds by Tobacco mosaic virus. This can be readily inactivated by seed treatments. 
The second type of seed transmission occurs when the virus is present in the embryo tissue that can happen prior to fertilization or takes place at pollination. Pea seed-borne mosaic virus is a well studied plant virus in this category. 
 
 
Pollen Transmisison:  Some viruses are transmitted from plant to plant via pollen. As in seed transmission, pollen transmission has two mechanisms, gametic infection of embryo and direct infection of mother plant. 
 
Vegetative propagation: An important horticultural practice, and unfortunately a very effective method for perpetuating and spreading viruses. In clonally propagated plants, an infected mother plant which could be asymptomatic could be used to make hundreds and thousands of daughter plants, which will all have the virus. Any vegetative parts  such as bulbs, corms, runners, and cutting will be infected. 
 
Grafting: Essentially a form of vegetative propagation, once the organic union has been established and plants (Scion and Stock) function as a single plant. In experimental front, grafting is used as a virus transmission methods, when all other methods fail.

Two years ago, Alphabet’s (Google) X-Labs initiated one of their infamous and far reaching “moonshot” projects focused on growing food sustainably on global scale. As you might expect, the project has been, and is kept pretty secret, but the company recently unveiled some details about the project through a company blog article (Grant, 2020) and their newly established website (https://x.company/projects/mineral/). The project is called “Mineral” and according to project lead Elliot Grant, the team has been working “alongside experts in the field – literally and figuratively…developing and testing a range of software and hardware prototypes based on breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, simulation, sensors, robotics and more”.

One of the tools the team has developed is a self-propelled “plant buggy” equipped with multiple cameras, sensors, GPS and other electronic equipment (Fig. 1). According to Mineral’s website, “Over the past few years, the plant buggy has trundled through strawberry fields in California and soybean fields in Illinois, gathering high quality images of each plant and counting and classifying every berry and every bean. To date, the team has analyzed a range of crops like melons, berries, lettuce, oilseeds, oats and barley—from sprout to harvest.” Stated objectives of Mineral’s software are to combine and analyze data collected from the field, soil health information and weather data to 1) predict how different varieties of plants respond to their environments, 2) allow growers to treat individual plants with fertilizers and pesticides to optimize production and reduce inputs and 3) help growers predict the size and yield of their crops.

It is exciting that a cutting-edge tech company like Alphabet is taking on an agricultural project like this. It will be fascinating to see what technical breakthroughs and solutions the company will be able to achieve for all crops, including vegetables.

March is traditionally the time when winter annual weeds die and summer annual weeds start growing. Weed management would be much easier if this transition was clear cut. Like everything else, many factors can complicate this. Especially here in the low desert with mild winters and summer irrigation. Some summer annual weeds have survived all winter and some winter annual weeds will grow all summer. Sprangletop and sandbur are classified as summer annuals but they have survived all winter in a dormant state and will regrow from established crowns as it continues to warm up. Not all survive the winter and some new plants will come from seed this summer. Those coming from seed can be controlled with preemergence herbicides but those coming from crowns can not be. Other weeds that survive year round that are not normally classified as perennials are clovers, mallows and thistles. Many of these have become very widespread and difficult to control. White sweet clover and both green and Mexican sprangletop have become more widespread every year.
