Downy mildew has always been one of the major problem for PCAs and growers in the desert southwest. The symptoms observed are green to yellow angular spots on the upper surface of the leaves and fluffy growth on the lower side (See Picture). Symptoms usually start from older leaves. As disease progresses the lesion turn brown and dry up and in some occasions, the disease can become systemic causing dark discoloration of vascular tissue.
Favorable condition for disease development:
The pathogen Bremia lactucae thrives in damp, cool condition, with moisture present on leaves. Spores are short-lived but dispersed efficiently by wind during moist period. Cultivated lettuce is the main host of the pathogen but it has also been reported to infectartichoke, cornflower and strawflower.
Why is downy mildew difficult to manage?
One of the main reason that hinders the disease management is the complexity of the pathogen. Bremia lactucae consists of multiple races (pathotypes), and new races continue to occur as pathogen evolves. The pathogen is one of the fastest evolving plant pathogen. And each pathotypes have developed insensitivity to fungicides to different extent.
One of the best practice is to grow resistant cultivar, but there are limitations. As the pathogen is highly variable and dynamic, resistant cultivars are not a permanent solution as the pathogen overcomes the resistance by evolving into virulent strains and isolates.
Preventative application of fungicides are effective to some extent. Reducing leaf wetness and humidity by using drip or furrow irrigation can be helpful. However, weather condition like rain during cool weather as we had in past couple of weeks is conducive to development of epidemics and we have very little control on that matter.
It Takes a Village:
And better yet the whole nation or world! Downy mildew is a bigger problem than we think. It is just not a problem in Arizona and California, it is a nationwide, worldwide problem. Thousands of plant pathologist/scientists/labs are working hard everyday to combat the disease.
Dr. Michelmore’s lab in University of California-Davis has been working on downy mildew for years and they need our help to build the database for next several years. Please let me (Bindu Poudel) or anyone in University of Arizona know if you see symptoms in the field. We can come collect the samples and send it to UC-Davis. The goal is to racetype as many isolates as possible to understand the genetic variability, the more information we have about the pathogen, the more it helps the scientific community come up with better management practice, better resistant cultivars etc.

The autonomous agricultural robot industry is an incredibly fast-moving space. Startups, established companies and academic researchers are continuously putting forth new ideas and products. It’s hard to keep up with. In November of 2020, Future Farming (Misset Publisher, BV, Doetinchem, Netherlands) published a Field Robots Catalogue that provides a comprehensive overview of the state of autonomous ag robots. The article provides brief summaries of 35 autonomous ag robots that are currently commercially available. Along with a brief paragraph about what each robot does, the article presents information about how many robots from a particular manufacturer are actively being used, the cost of the machine, and links to a video of the device in action. Most of the robots are for weed management in vegetable crops. Kill mechanisms range from spot spraying to mechanical weed removal to electrocution. Several of the robots featured are applicable and relevant to Arizona vegetable production, and some are currently operating in the U.S. If you’re interested in ag robots and want to get up to date, this article is an excellent resource and quick read. Growers and PCAs can monitor data from the Yuma Leaf Wetness Network through the AZMET website located at the following URL: http://188.8.131.52:460
The website updates information on leaf wetness and near-surface air temperature every 15 minutes. Wetness data are provided in graphical format (see figure below). Output from the leaf wetness sensors increase from the grey (dry) zone of the graph to the blue (wet) zone when wetness (dew or rain) is detected by the sensors.

Corn earworm: Moth activity decreased during the past 2 weeks and is comparable to what we’ve seen in the past 5 years at the end of the produce season.
Beet armyworm: Moths remain active, and about average for the end of the season.
Cabbage looper: Cabbage looper moths declined in most trap locations over the past 2 weeks. Below average activity for the end of the season.
Whitefly Adult movement at seasonal lows and relatively absent; typical for this time of the season.
Thrips Thrips activity has increased in most trap locations, but still below average for this time of the season.
Aphids: Adults beginning to disperse again; above average abundance for this time of the year.
Leafminers Adult activity increased significantly in Yuma and Gila Valleys; about average for end of the season.
DBM adult captures decreased slightly in most trap locations as crops begin to terminate. The exception is in Bard/Winterhaven where trap catches increased significantly near seed crops. Trap catches overall have been stable during March, but higher than the previous two seasons.
Area-wide Diamondback Moth Trapping Network
In response to the recent outbreaks of Diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella in Yuma, we have established a pheromone trap network designed to monitor the activity and movement of adult populations of DBM. PCAs have had difficulty controlling DBM in cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower since October 2016. Traps have been placed in Roll, Wellton, Dome Valley, Gila Valley and Yuma Valley in locations where cole crops are presently being grown or in areas where infestations were known to occur in the fall.
