It’s unfortunately a very great season to be a plant pathologist…
We have confirmed the first sample of Fusarium wilt on lettuce submitted to the Yuma Plant Health Clinic from Yuma County. The stunted seedlings looked like any other typical case of damping-off at the seedling stage. When plated on culture media, subsequently confirmed Fusarium colonies grew abundantly from the declining plant tissues. If you’re not already on guard and scouting, this is a warning that Fusarium is active in Yuma County.
Adding on to this early alert, we’ve received a surge of submissions of young brassicas to the clinic. Several severely wilted and declining plants from around Yuma County have cultured positive for Pythium, likely as an opportunistic invader coming in on the back of all the early-season rain that brought stress to seeds and young transplants. Growers may want to consider oomycides, but only if the seedling disease is first confirmed to be Pythium. Remember, many seedling diseases caused by true fungi are indistinguishable from those caused by Pythium.

The autonomous agricultural robot industry is an incredibly fast-moving space. Startups, established companies and academic researchers are continuously putting forth new ideas and products. It’s hard to keep up with. In November of 2020, Future Farming (Misset Publisher, BV, Doetinchem, Netherlands) published a Field Robots Catalogue that provides a comprehensive overview of the state of autonomous ag robots. The article provides brief summaries of 35 autonomous ag robots that are currently commercially available. Along with a brief paragraph about what each robot does, the article presents information about how many robots from a particular manufacturer are actively being used, the cost of the machine, and links to a video of the device in action. Most of the robots are for weed management in vegetable crops. Kill mechanisms range from spot spraying to mechanical weed removal to electrocution. Several of the robots featured are applicable and relevant to Arizona vegetable production, and some are currently operating in the U.S. If you’re interested in ag robots and want to get up to date, this article is an excellent resource and quick read. We are always adjusting how we use herbicides to fit the unique conditions in this area. The herbicides that are registered for use on lettuce here are limited and they all require a little different management. Environmental conditions, soil characteristics and Chemical properties all can greatly affect how well the 3 preemergence herbicides used in lettuce will work. These include Balan, Prefar and Kerb. Environmental conditions and soil characteristic vary greatly from year to year and field to field. It is difficult to make general recommendations on how best to use these three herbicides because of this. Chemical characteristics do not vary, however, and we can make some generalizations on how they should be used.
We use a lot of water here during stand establishment and at this time of year. The water solubility of Balan, Prefar and Kerb vary widely and should be considered when deciding how to use them. Water solubility is the amount of the herbicide that will dissolve in water. This is usually given as PPM or mg/liter. The higher the number the more soluble it is. Solubility will effect leaching into the soil and runoff. The solubility of Balan is 0.1 PPM,Prefar is 5.6 PPM and Kerb is 15 PPM. What this means is that Balan is very insoluble and has to be mechanically incorporated. Prefar is 56 times more soluble than Balan and can be incorporated with overhead water but this is still not a very soluble herbicide and a lot of water is needed. Kerb is 150 times more soluble than Balan and almost 3 times more soluble than Prefar. Kerb will leach and the amount of overhead water applied must be carefully managed.
This time of year, John would often highlight Lepidopteran pests in the field and remind us of the importance of rotating insecticide modes of action. With worm pressure present in local crops, it’s a good time to revisit resistance management practices and ensure we’re protecting the effectiveness of these tools for seasons to come. Results of pheromone and sticky trap catches below!!
Corn earworm: CEW moth counts declined across all traps from last collection; average for this time of year.
Beet armyworm: BAW moth increased over the last two weeks; below average for this early produce season.
Cabbage looper: Cabbage looper counts increased in the last two collections; below average for mid-late September.
Diamondback moth: a few DBM moths were caught in the traps; consistent with previous years.
Whitefly: Adult movement decreased in most locations over the last two weeks, about average for this time of year.
Thrips: Thrips adult activity increased over the last two collections, typical for late September.
Aphids: Aphid movement absent so far; anticipate activity to pick up when winds begin blowing from N-NW.
Leafminers: Adult activity increased over the last two weeks, about average for this time of year.
