Contact Herbicides that have Soil Activity 2015
Goal (Oxyfurofen) is a“contact “ type herbicides that also can be used as a preemergent herbicide Contact herbicides must contact the plant to effect its growth. They are not systemic and don’t move beyond the site of contact. Goal is a cell membrane disruptor or PPO inhibitor that causes the destruction of cell membranes. It works as a preemergent herbicide by effecting small seedlings as they emerge from the soil. A barrier is formed on the soil surface that the plant must contact. Anything that destroys that barrier will reduce the effect of this treatment. It normally takes a significantly higher application rate than is used when Goal is used as a postemergent treatment. 6 to 8 ounces of GoalTender is common as a postemergent treatment while 16 ounces is the common preemergent rate.
