    Impact of Planting Date on Aphid Infestations and Contamination in Head Lettuce

    A five year study was conducted with the goal of identifying planting windows during the season when lettuce is at risk from aphid infestations. The studies indicate that planting date and temperature likely have a strong influence on seasonal abundance of aphids.

    Cowpea Aphid in Alfalfa

    Recent outbreaks of cowpea aphid in alfalfa are more than a local phenomena. Large populations of cowpea aphids have been reported throughout Arizona. The reason behind these outbreaks are unknown. This article hopes to bring some insight by discussing the cowpea aphid, the damage it causes, and suggestions on controlling it.

    Head Lice: Identification, Biology, and Integrated Pest Management

    Evaluation of Clothianidin Seed Treatments for Bagrada Bug Control in Broccoli

    With the outbreak of the Bagrada bug, it was estimated that they infested more than 80% of the acreage in Arizona between 2010-2014. This article outlines an expirement on the use of Clothianidin seed treatments as a way to manage the Bagrada Bug pest. The results indicated that this treatment was effective.

    2015 Insecticide Usage on Arizona Lettuce

    A total of 19 surveys were completed in the 2015 workshop, representing an estimated total of 25,905 fall acres and 26,255 spring lettuce acres from Yuma and neighboring Imperial County. This article concludes that the local produce industry has made great strides in minimizing environmental impacts in lettuce production. There have not been any major reports of field failures.

    Predicting and Mitigating Resistance Development in Whiteflies

    Insecticidal resistance in whiteflies is a real problem, threatening economic and effective pest control. Research is being done on whitefly resistances to currently used chemical controls and the potential of usage patterns to contribute to the development of these resistances. Effective resistance mitigation begins with the application of the first principles of resistance management.

    Pesticide Resistant Head Lice

    In 25 states head lice have become highly resistant to the most commonly used lice shampoo treatments, including pyrethrins and the pyrethroid insecticide permethrin. In fact, most states (104 out of 109 samples) tested so far have lice that are resistant to these over-the-counter lice treatment options.
